Description:
Identifying Trees using a Dichotomous Key
To become a certified Virginia Master Naturalist, trainees must complete at least 40 hours of training courses that provide background knowledge and skills a naturalist needs to know. One of these skills includes how to use scientific tools such as a dichotomous key.
This training was developed to teach participants with various backgrounds how to use a dichotomous key to identify trees. New trainees may already have experience using a dichotomous key, or may never have used one.
The Resources slide contains a link to a downloadable guide to native trees of Virginia, which includes a dichotomous key that participants can use during the activity. In an in-person delivery of this training, instructors can encourage participants to bring their own leaves and branches to identify. Otherwise, the specimen slides in the slide deck can be used during the activity.
